On 7 April UnitingJustice Australia sent a letter to the Minister for Foreign Affairs,The Hon. Julie Bishop MP, urging the Government to reconsider its position on nuclear weapons.
We stressed that nuclear weapons are inherently illegal and are an obstacle to the building of peace. On the eve of the 70th anniversary of the bombings of Japan, now is the time for real progress on nuclear disarmament. There is increasing worldwide understanding of the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. We called upon the Government to endorse the Vienna Conference Pledge and to engage in negotiations for a treaty to ban nuclear weapons.
