The occasion titled A Destiny Together: Justice for First Peoples will be one of the most historic acts of public witness by a church in Australia's recent history. The Church will gather for a public worship service to express grief at the continued racism and injustice faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
The Uniting Church will re-commit itself to work for justice, reconciliation and the recognition of Australia's First Peoples in the Constitution. The Uniting Church is the first church to change its own constitution to acknowledge Aboriginal and Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia.
The service will be led by the Uniting Church President, Rev. Prof. Andrew Dutney, and the Chair of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress, Rev. Rronang Garrawurra.
This event is part of a nationwide Week of Prayer and Fasting for Justice for First Peoples. Uniting Church members and congregations across the country will be engaged in daily prayer and fasting, special services, public forums and vigils.
